Ideal for home or office, this French press coffeemaker doubles as an insulated thermos so coffee stays hot and fresh for up to two hours. The pot holds 34 ounces (1 liter), nearly seven 5-ounce cups, and can be used for brewing tea as well as coffee. It’s made of stainless steel polished to a mirror-finish, has a large, comfortable handle, and is dishwasher-safe. The lid seals in heat remarkably well and turns to prevent heat from escaping through the spout between pours. The pot stands 8-1/2 inches high, including the plunger top. –Fred Brack

Found ‘em…

February 23, 2009 at 12:30 pm (fredlet)

You know my dreadful oven mitt (covered in cows that I loved dearly, but generally gave me 2nd degree burns) that I couldn't replace, but also didn't want to?
I finally found an acceptable alternative.

Red silicone mitts found at Fry's no less….

-they slide onto my hand easily (big wide mouth)
-aren't too long (I have little paws and they only go to slightly above my wrist)
-they are flexible enough to USE… that was half the battle with lots of the other silicone mitts
also
-they have holes at the top for hanging
-they have a magnet so you can just slap it up against the oven (or in my case, the side of the fridge) for easy grabitude.

Swanky!
And yes, I bought 3 pair.

Trauma

February 20, 2009 at 9:47 pm (fredlet)

I’m having a bit of trauma over Palm discontinuing the Palm OS [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_(PDA) ]. I HATE WINDOWS MOBILE. I don’t like Blackberry and I don’t think that the Google phone supports a keyboard (I have one that is specifically for Palm OS, but I also have a fold up Bluetooth keyboard as well that I want to use). I like having applications that work and I can do SO MUCH on my little Treo.
I’ve written articles on it (in fact, I wrote part of my contribution to David Pogue’s book on it (in graffiti no less), written emails galore, blog posting, kept myself amused for hours in airports before I ever had an iPod.
My mom is a junky, too (though recently she has gone over to the dark side
and got an iPhone… even if you can’t COPY FUCKING PASTE on it. Lame. Its
pretty, but severely lame.)
I still have almost all of my old Pilots/PalmPilots/Palm devices.

Pilot 1000
Pilot 5000
Pilot Personal
Pilot Pro
Palm III (I helped beta test these, and I had the little modem, it was
soooo cool.)
Handspring Visor Deluxe in orange ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handspring_Visor ) and this is when I got the Audible module.
Handspring Prism
(I tried to live life without a Palm here, but it was awful… so I bought a…)
Treo 600
and lately I have the Treo 650.

There’s 12 years of Palm stuff. Not to mention the years of being the go to
person for cases….my favorite is still the leather one that I had for my
Handspring Deluxe.

Mmmmmm. They’d better hurry up and invent the phone I want.

This is fantastic!
Coffee Printer – Uses Spent Grounds for Ink
via Single Serve Espresso.com

From the Greener Gadgets Design Contest, this one surfaces; printer that uses your own spent grounds as an ink source. Drop the grounds in, insert paper, and move the lever back and forth over the paper to make the image/text.

Garmin, ASUS To Release Navigating Mobile Phone

http://tech.yahoo.com/news/nf/20090212/tc_nf/64637

"Garmin is known for its ability to make user-friendly and useful mobile devices, especially ones featuring GPS, and ASUS has been a pioneer in the new and growing category of the sub-notebook, or netbook.

The offspring of these two specialists is the first nvifone with Windows Mobile that offers enterprise e-mail. It has dual-band 3.5G/tri-band GSM with Wi-Fi, a browser, push e-mail, document viewing, multimedia capability, Bluetooth, download speeds up to 7.2 Mbps, finger-based zoom and pan of Web pages, and, of course, Garmin satellite navigation.

There's also a 2.8-inch TFT touch display, a built-in mike and speakers, a three-megapixel camera with automatic geotagging, a full QWERTY soft keyboard, syncing with a computer to keep contacts and e-mails in parallel, and location-based services (LBS) that the companies describe as "the most advanced LBS experience of any Windows Mobile phone."

The M20 offers the navigational smarts of a premium Garmin nvi sat nav, including preloaded maps and points of interest (POIs) for regions around the world. POIs are continually updated, and a user can, for example, find a destination by typing in the name or address, searching by category, or navigating to the contacts."

and then they lost me…

"But Ken Dulaney, vice president of mobile computing at Gartner, said the "thing that bothers me about the M20 is the size of the touchscreen." He added that Gartner's research indicated that a screen less than 3.5 inches, in combination with Windows Mobile, is "going to be a problem.""

Boogers.

Choosing my next mobile phone…

February 12, 2009 at 12:48 am (fredlet)

I suspect it doesn't exist yet.

Requirements:
GSM (tri- or quad-band support)
Unlocked
External keyboard support (bluetooth or using my old wireless Palm keyboard)
Large text file capability (I currently use WordSmith)
Lots of apps available (like on my Palm device)
Color touchscreen
GPS capability (for use with Google Maps) and other location based things
Audible support
camera

Nice to Have:
Wi-fi
Tethering to computer ability

Deal Killers (if it has this, I won't buy it no matter what):
Windows Mobile
Verizon service
Doesn't have copy/paste

Best of both worlds…

I’ve decided to build a tiny home somewhere and also have a trailer.

So, in preparation, here are the lightweight plates I want for the trailer…

Bamako by Corelle…I just want the plates though. I wouldn’t use the cups…and may not use the bowls.

Tex said…

February 8, 2009 at 4:09 pm (De-cluttering)

“I may have a problem with iPods, but at least it doesn’t take over the whole house.”

My witty rejoinder?
“Shut up.”

I don’t think of it so much as having 7 metric tons of t-shirts as helping to stabilize the Hayward fault line in my area.
And I’m working on a new system… and no, it doesn’t involve buying more organize-y stuff… the new mantra is “If it doesn’t fit in the space, it goes.”
My keening can be heard in the midwest.
Sorry about the noise, y’all.

Hmmm…room for one more? ;)

FYI: the one on the left is the brisket we are reviving (and its working well) and the one in the front is proto-chicken soup. The stoneware chinese pot in back holds my coffee filters.
