general stuff

August 28, 2008 at 10:22 pm (fredlet) (, )

In the TMI category, I’m probably losing my shit and crying over stuff that really isn’t an issue because I’m PMS’ing.

Other than that, things are ok.
1. Foot is better. Here’s how to fix a hurt foot…
a) go to the minor injury clinic and let them tell you it isn’t broken (after x-rays)
b) schedule a follow up appointment for a week later with a specialist and walk around in flip flops with that little sock thing on until the appointment.
c) the day before the appointment your foot will miraculously feel SO MUCH BETTER.
d) Go to the podiatrist in good faith and have her tell you the same thing (though we both agreed that it was soft tissue damage and not a broken cuneiform bone. Most likely the bottom ligament got really twisted.)

2. Bunny is fine, still haven’t heard from the doctor. I know if he was freaked out he would have called. He’s pretty cool though.

3. We have entered the era of duct-tape with beast… more precisely Gorilla Tape.
The rear window drive gave up the ghost (and now the other rear window is about to die, I can hear it in its death rattles) so I ordered a part. In the meantime, I had to tape the window closed or risk getting my car either stolen or vandalized beyond repair. (And I’m too tired and crabby to deal with either of those scenarios.)
Mmmmm classy.

4. Packing list will be redone completely. I’ll re-post when I stop changing my mind every 5 minutes.

5. I’m working on a Feline CRF tab (see previously mentioned crying jag) but it may take me a while because denial, she is a beautiful thing.

Weekend recap

August 25, 2008 at 10:50 am (De-cluttering, bunnycat, fredlet, house-y) ()

Priority items first: Bunny is GREAT. (I didn’t post on Saturday and Mama texted me a little worried – she knows I just shut down when bad things happen, I think I posted it on Facebook though.)
No bloodwork back yet, but the vet was super impressed that she gained 2 whole pounds and is eating all the time.
He seemed concerned and asked how much regular cat food I was giving her but wasn’t all that upset when it only turned out to be about 10-15% of her food all day.
He said he had planned to test for hyperthyroid, but that since she hadn’t lost weight (and kept it on without me using the anti-nausea medicine AT ALL) he didn’t need to test for it.
He said keep doing exactly what I am doing, its clear she’s thriving (and I told him about her being excited about the renal diet food and trotting though the house, then levitating on to the very high bed and he looked thoughtful and said “amazing. at 17 even.”) and I might not have to bring her back for 4 months this time depending on the numbers.
I got a second prescription for a different brand of renal diet food to maybe get her off the regular cat food – it wasn’t a problem with Bunny needing the flavor, but when I tried to move her only onto the renal stuff, she got a bit runny and I sort of freaked out and didn’t want to lose any ground by letting her get anywhere near dehydrated again. So I went back to the previous mix. He said that was weird but if it made a difference, definitely keep her hydrated. I asked if he wanted to give me another script for a different kind of food to try to see if that would work instead, he did and I need to order it today..can’t find anything locally at all.

Saturday had started off way too early.
At 5 am (you know, that time I don’t ever want to see) Bunny was jumping up and down on me a little worried. I figured that she was just hungry, so I rearranged her food only to find that the ants were there before me.
So I dragged my arse out of bed, fed her in the kitchen so we’d have about 5 hours in between feeding and the vet visit (they say 12 hours, but it is just too hard on her to go that long without. I told the vet that and that the last time we came in she didn’t do 12 hours either and the numbers held steady then as well. We shall see, but I’m still not going to torture my cat when I know I can prevent it.). Then I attacked the ants with the Method Grapefruit Wipes and spray. Works like a charm, but I’m not charming at 5 am, so I made coffee and watched some infomercials.
I knew if I went back to sleep I’d miss the vet appointment, but I catnapped anyway and woke up just in time to throw clothes on, catch Bunny and go.
She was utterly unamused by this trip.
Survived the trip there, the appointment and back home (Bunny didn’t unwind as much as she had previously, so she sulked for a little while when I got back.) I knew if I fell asleep I was going to sleep all day, so Tex and I went to Mikey and Lee’s and got some errands done, had some AMAZING ribs then came home to feed the Bunny.
She’d forgiven me by then.
Sunday I got a harebrained scheme to fix my closet that refuses to be tidy. I moved my Elfa drawers back into the actual (and woefully inadequate) closet then decided to add another hanger rod where it used to be (here is a pic of the set, but it is two iterations out of date… the luggage was where the Elfa drawers were and now the new hanger rod.) to hang all my trail clothes/cold weather clothes/favorite new thing du jour.
Have I mentioned I LOVE Stolmen? Its like a closet version of Tinkertoys.
I got more hangers at Ikea on a kamikaze run last night before they closed (I was feeling that manic feeling where I’d never sleep if I didn’t get this done RIGHT THEN) as well as that light that I wanted originally, a new dish scrubby and some skirt hangers. Got it all hung and leveled (with the help of a free iPod touch app ;) ) and my clothes are being arranged slowly. I need a few more of those padded pants hangers from Target, but they were out of stock yesterday when we went. I’ll go today after the doctor’s appointment. (Podiatrist, the foot is immensely better, but still not there… it feel crunchy when I accidentally roll on it and that squicks me out something fierce.)
I’m tired and busy (nothing new) and all I want to do is hang out with the Bunny and either read or design new closet iterations (nothing new).Still need to win the lotto, but it is being recalcitrant.

My Publishing History

August 21, 2008 at 10:31 pm (fredlet)

1991-1994: The Fredlet Newsletter
Inspired name, non?
Published quarterly(ish) or whenever I could afford to print it at Kinko’s and mail it to the 10 people who got it whether they asked for it or not.
Laid out in Quark XPress on a Mac LC.
Notable guest contributors: Bugboy and Douglas
Format:Newsletter

1996: www.sirius.com/~fredlet
In the days before sirius.com was a satellite radio company and just an ISP in the Bay Area.
Published from a Mac 8100 or a WIN franken-computer with a purple spray painted cover. This was when I was learning HTML from viewing source on the webpages and hacking at it in BBEdit…also was an experimental time with Macromedia working with Shockwave in the various products. Freehand even had a plugin where you could create an image map with links or a vector file that you could zoom in super close.
I don’t think the wayback machine goes that far back on my site. I did convert over to putting my newsletter onto the web and I probably still only had 10 people reading it.
Format:Journal

1997-2004: www.fredlet.com
Usher in the Dreaamweaver era.
I joined the Dreamweaver team as a QA person and helped to release it that year. My personal site served as guine pig and testing grounds for the new functionality and Round Trip HTML that we worked on in the app.
Published on my Mac Powerbook G3 Bronze (still have it, actually) with whatever flavor or Dreamweaver dev build was sort of stable. I was effectively the Mac chick on the team badgering the dev folks when something didn’t behave in a Mac-ly sort of manner. (yes, I was a giant pain in the ass then but I made them food to bribe them into doing the fix.)
This was also the heyday of me as the Pilot Chick obsessing over my Palm Pilot and the associated cases, writing articles and generally having a personal site that took up about 10 hours a day (no kidding) however I managed to treat it as part of my day job for a very long time and was insanely happy.
Format:Journal

2004-2006: fredlet.blogspot.com
2004 began the era of mobile blogging for me. I wanted email-to-post functionality (for free and so I wouldn’t have to configure my own paid site-paying for hosting is so 1998) and I wanted something a little less manual than the format I had going at my HTML site. I had archives that I maintained (still have, just not on the web currently) one page for each year and that took a bit of time to maintain. It was, in the words of one my high school alumni, “cavernous”.
Published via my Handspring, and later my Treo, input from my keyboard out on the road.
I let this particular sub domain go and now it is occupied by a tiny little Fred in England. :)
Format:Blog

2006-present: fredlet.wordpress.com
I think it was the fact that I was maintaining about 5 blogs that made me want tags and categories so I could put them all into one and just use a filter to show the like posts…and Eden moved over there (so clearly it wasn’t shite) and I sort of blindly do what Eden does for some reason. (I think shortly after I made the change, blogger came out with those features. ah well.)
I was able to import the blogger archives into WordPress, so a great deal of my old content came over. I never did convert my old HTML to blog format… I don’t have that much free time in a year.
Format:Blog

What’s next?
Dunno.
I am fairly compelled to write this stuff. Always have been. So, in one form or another, I will publish, push, blog, journal or [insert new trendy term here] my inanities and foibles to the world. 12 years of electronic blathering and a previous 5 before that for the print version; so 17 years of talk. Yeah, chances are I’ll keep doing this even though the press has decided that blogging is a phase.

Packing List:3 days in a car with my cousin

August 21, 2008 at 8:42 pm (Travel: Packing List, fredlet)

This cousin to be precise…

Clothes

  • Orange Crush Tshirt (jammies)
  • orange flip flops
  • Nick and Nora Ports of Call jammies
  • Polarfleece v-neck sweatshirt
  • REI Denali quick dry pants (dark khaki)
  • 2 black tshirts
  • white tshirt
  • fish t-shirt
  • jacket (haven’t decided which one yet)
  • Keen’s
  • socks and undies

Stuff

I will probably be hyperventilating being away from Bunny for more than 12 hours, Tex will be with her, but I keep going back to the point that it is several days of the rest of her life that I am missing out on…Maybe I should add Prozac to the fucking list.

I’ve managed to work out Bunny’s feed…

August 20, 2008 at 12:42 pm (fredlet) ()

I’ve managed to work out Bunny’s feeding schedule (and mostly because she’s not starving all the time anymore; she’s put on a good amount of weight. I don’t know why, but “she’s in fine flesh” seems to be the operative phrase when I think of it. No idea where that one came from.) and now I don’t have to get up at 5 am to feed her.
Here’s the line up:

7:30 am ish: full plate + medicine (this has to last while I am at work)
6:30 pm: snack + medicine
9:30 pm: snack + different medicine
11:45 pm: full plate for the night shift of eating (and to distract her from the fluids I have to give her)

This is good because I am of the opinion (and apparently the age) where I don’t want to see 5am from either side. Neither up til or up at, thankyouverymuch.
Anyhoo, she still wants to be fed around 7:30ish, and this morning she jumped on me around 6:45am for a snick snack (this phrase snorked from Mom and then mutated to snicky. “Want some snicky?” makes Bunny’s ears perk up and she’ll trot through the house with her tail up in the air when you make like you will feed her.)
I knew it was 6:45am, not because I could see or reach the alarm clock, but because that is when my alarm goes off (so that I can hit snooze for 45 minutes). This morning, she lay down on my side with her paws hanging over my shoulder in a heart-rendingly cute fashion and I just couldn’t bear to move her to hit snooze….or get up to feed her, but I don’t think she was all that concerned with food then.
I figured it would be a bad thing if I let my alarm buzz til it turned itself off because if I went back to sleep I stood a good chance of seriously over sleeping. Luckily, Bunny was hungry enough an hour later to jump up and down on me (literally) until I woke up… this is an improvement on her nipping at my arm or gnawing on my thumb until I move.
Bunnycat as alarm clock. New use for cat.

Followup

August 18, 2008 at 11:00 am (fredlet) ()

When you say followup appointment, it implies that it is a related appointment.
(ok, my mercury in Virgo is rearing its ugly, petty little head – bear with me).

The last doctor’s appointment I had was for my foot being all broke like… so when the hospital called and said we need followup blood work for you, I was totally like all WTF dude?
Blood work has exactly jack shit to do with my messed up foot, thankyouverymuch.

And then they backtracked saying “Oh yes, its your routine yearly bloodwork…” except that I haven’t ever had them ask me in for this before. So really, its the baseline blood work.
Lame.

I know what they are doing though… I get wiggy in the waiting room at the hospital, and I had sat there for an hour and a half waiting to see the doctor I had an appointment with (I’m not complaining about that, this was basically the non-emergency emergency room so shit happens, its cool ese) but I was loaded up on painkillers so I could walk and I probably hadn’t drank any water that day… all a formula for a higher blood pressure than normal for me. (not to mention the poundage I have put on since last summer for various and sundry reasons-none of which are defensible).
I also had a slight fever too… 99.4 which is 1.8 degrees higher than I normally am. No clue why either.
Stress? Me? Never.

So, I’m not ignoring this, but I do need to get my blood presure taken somewhere non-medical for a more realistic reading… I’ll probably go to Mikey’s and do it there (maybe a sugar level test since he has diabetes supplies). I’m sure it is way higher than it needs to be anyway so I’m casting a gimlet eye on sodium intake that may have crept up on me without paying attention (I don’t salt foods, but I might have inadvertantly added a food that has high sodium without realizing it. I do get on eating kicks.), I’ll drink water (hate it. maybe I’ll use this as an excuse to get reverse osmosis kit for the apartment since the water around here is serious shite and the filtered stuff at work just doesn’t cut it either. I am morally against bottled water as well.) and this will be the kick in the pants to lose more weight.
I have lost some but I need to get on my exercise kick again (and as soon as I can walk I’ll treadmill – but for now, situps and pushups will have to do.).

…and yes, I know that I am, in fact, a giant pain in the ass.
